Lemon balm is a member of the mint family, with a super lemon aroma. The leaves when rubbed smell incredible! They always make our mouths water and crave some lip smackin’ lemonade. Like its relatives in the mint family, it is a perennial down to zone 4 with some winter mulch. Lemon balm is a popular ingredient in many natural bug sprays, and also a central ingredient in our own recipe. Also like other mints, lemon balm spreads very easily, so it’s nice to have a little patch of it somewhere you don’t mind it spreading around. One way to do this is to plant it in containers.
The benefits of lemon balm go far beyond just the smell, it is used in a multitude of medicinal teas, salves, infusions and many other recipes. This is a well researched herb that can help you sleep, and promote relaxation, as well as uplift the mood and spirits! There is much more info than we could fit here, so check some out! We use it here on the homestead quite often, dried in teas, burned as an incense or just a little snack in the garden.
